MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is facing a challenge with the increasing incidents of setting fire to garbage, including plastic and coconut shells, along roadsides.
While grappling with the issue, MMC officials express confidence in resolving the problem in the coming days, emphasizing the urgent need to prevent the creation of black spots, considered a major cause of the problem. Dumping of waste and subsequent burning, including plastic and wood items, has created a nuisance in the commercial town.

Despite efforts in waste management, the civic body finds it challenging to tackle the problem, with reported incidents of municipal workers themselves setting fire to garbage. MMC Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar, responding to the issue, highlighted the lack of a mechanism to dispose of dumped coconut shells on roadsides.
Sankhwalkar informed that efforts are underway to address the problem, including the installation of machinery at Sonsodo for disposing of wood items. The municipality has ordered a machine for disposing of coconut shells and another machine from the Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA). The goal is to transport coconut shells to Saligao, where specialized machinery is available, or handle them at the municipal level once the machine is received.
The CO emphasised that garbage collection contractors have been instructed to promptly clear black spots or dumped garbage along roadsides, with a focus on preventing the chance of waste fires. Serious attention is being given to garbage management, and efforts are ongoing to enhance disposal mechanisms and prevent environmental pollution.
