VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council is set to issue public notice urging citizens to stop polluting water bodies in the Mormugao municipal jurisdiction on the basis of order issued to the municipality by the Directorate of Municipal Administration.
In a joint inspection conducted by MMC staff and health officer of the Urban Health Centre, Vasco, the locals were found releasing dirty water in the nullahs and other water bodies.
“We have instructed people not to wash clothes and release sewage water in the nullahs and other water bodies which lead to the pollution and further inviting health hazards,” said Municipal Engineer Surendra Gaonkar.
“We inspected Vaddem Lake, Vaddem nullah, Mangor Hill nullah and other water bodies and in some places we found that water is polluted due to the release of sewage water by some houses and washing of clothes,” he said.
“Soon municipality will be issuing public notices instructing people not to pollute water bodies by any means, Gaonkar mentioned.
When asked whether they found any plastic dumped in some water bodies, Gaonkar said that due to door to door garbage collection plastic dumping is minimal.
When contacted Vasco Urban Health Officer Dr Rashmi Khandeparkar, she informed that we have found some people especially at Chaferan area washing their clothes and releasing dirty water in the nullah and spring.
“We have instructed them to stop the washing of clothes and release of dirty water in the spring water. The inspection report will be send to DMA by MMC,” she said.
One local lady Sunita Mahale said that I was present during the inspection and I have also brought it to the notice of the officials that some people were involved in releasing dirty water in the nullah and the spring.
She further said that their councillor Kritesh Gaonkar in the past had done the desilting of the nullah. But it is also the responsibility of the people to cooperate with the local bodies and stay away from polluting the water bodies.
It may be recalled that DMA had instructed municipal sanitary inspectors to send an action plan to keep water bodies garbage free from their jurisdiction. As per the order, municipal sanitory inspector had identified the water bodies from the municipal area and had conducted a joint inspection on Friday along with the urban health officer and municipal engineer.
