MMC to start effective tax collection

To strengthen tax collection team; to crack down on businesses running without trade licences

MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) standing committee has passed a resolution to start effective house and commercial tax collection.
The resolution was taken at a meeting of the standing and market committees to discuss tax collection and related issues on Wednesday. The issues of administration and staff were also discussed at the meet, and a resolution was passed to expedite the work at the administration level, which is slow, according to locals. 
The committees have also decided to strengthen the tax collection team, to crack down on businesses running without trade licenses and to verify the existing trade licenses. Violators will be penalized during the drive.
The MMC has been collecting house tax from Margao and Fatorda on the basis of the census of houses conducted in 1972. However, the MMC, under the leadership of former chief officer Naveen S L, had recently collected over Rs 1 crore of outstanding commercial taxes and over Rs 70 lakh in house tax.
