The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to utilise the funds unused for several years and buy a compactor and a truck to pick up garbage.
The MMC will be spending nearly Rs 25 lakh for purchase of compactor and another Rs 14 lakh for a truck. The MMC, at present, has 4 compactors for collection of garbage of which three are broken down and cannot be repaired.
MMC Chairperson Babita Angle said the funds which were received from the Government had been lying in the treasury for quite some time. However, this fund was never ever. “I inquired with the Accounts Section and found out that a fund had been allotted but never used. This fund was on its way back to the Government Treasury but I have decided to use this fund for buying trucks,” said Babita.
The chairperson said the then Chief Officer had to inform the MMC on using the funds and because of non information lot of funds have gone back to the state treasury.
“The MMC had received money for development and also received money for E-Governance. There are nearly Rs two and half lack remaining which will be used for purchase of computers and will also be utilised for server repairs. This money will be used to replace the old computers with new ones,” she added.
Babita also informed that at least Rs 17 lakh will be spent on having garbage bins all over Margao.
“Last year the MMC has received Rs. 2 crore for the development work of the wards. This time we will be asking for more money,” she told Herald.
