PANJIM: The South-West monsoon is expected to hit Goa in the next six days, almost a week later than usual. The monsoon set over Kerala on Friday.
IMD Goa observatory in charge V K Mini confirmed that the monsoon has reached Kerala. “It is now advancing towards southern Karnataka and will reach Goa. It has crossed its halfway mark to Goa,” she said.
IMD had initially predicted the onset of the monsoon in the first week of June. While the country is likely to face a drought with rains being as low as 88 percent of the normal, Goa is expected to experience a normal season. “The monsoon for Goa will be normal,” Mini said.
As pre-monsoon showers lashed the state on Thursday evening, the Fire and Emergency Services have geared up to tackle any accidents and disasters caused by stormy rainfall.
The showers and cyclonic winds in the state on Thursday raised an alarm in the department as 65 calls were received by the control room. However, most of the calls were regarding uprooting of trees.
Speaking to Herald, Assistant Divisional Officer of Emergency Services Ajit Kamat said the department has taken precautions to meet any emergencies occurring due to heavy rainfall.
Kamat further said that the department has purchased spare parts for the electric cutter.
