PERNEM: Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday said strict segregation of subjects is a thing of the past as the world today is increasingly adopting multi-disciplinary approach in higher education to produce well-rounded individuals and research outcomes.
Inaugurating the Sant Sohirobanath Ambiye College of Arts and Commerce campus at Virnoda in Pernem, he said, “Various assessments have shown that exposure to art and social science have resulted in enhanced creativity including critical thinking of social and moral awareness and better teamwork and communication skills among students. Hence all colleges should start more multidisciplinary courses”.

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, Deputy Chief Minister and Pernem MLA Manohar Ajgaonkar, Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte and others were present.
Speaking further, he said, “In this 21st century the aim to excel must be in the minds of the people and students as it is not sufficient to get first class but to excel in the chosen field in whatever subject one pursues.”
“Quality higher education is invariably a hallmark of all developed economies. It prepares students for more meaningful and productive roles in improving the standard of living. It provides the much needed trained human resources in various sectors and drives economical growth and societal well being”, Naidu said.
“Innovation is a key driver of the knowledge-based economy. With its edge in Information and Communication Technology the educated young population has the potential to become world leaders. There is inherent talent in every corner of the society what is required is to recognise the talent, encourage and upgrade the skills to face the challenges of the modern world”, he added.
The Gender Priority Index for higher education has improved in Goa in last five years and today the number of female students is higher than males with grade enrolment ratio of 30 per cent in the State while the national average is 27.3 per cent, he said.
“I am pleased to know that in addition to a big
library, spacious auditorium and airy classrooms, the college also has an observatory that houses a sophisticated telescope, a recording studio, a butterfly park, and a modest botanical garden,” Naidu said.
The Vice President said, “It is commendable that this college also has a fully equipped gymnasium, NCC and NSS units besides a special focus on games such as kabaddi, kho-kho and volleyball. Many students have won medals at University, State and National levels.”
“I am happy that Pernem College has progressed steadily over the years and has around 744 students and a faculty of 33 teaching staff both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels,” he added.
