PANJIM: After being castigated in the past over the crime scenario, particularly against tourists, the recent report of the National Crime Records Bureau has brought some cheer for Goa. As per data, the overall crime rate has seen a dip from 2014 to 2016 with the State ranking 25 in crime rate. Goa is fourth in crime against foreign tourists after Delhi, Maharashtra and Puduchery.
While in 2014, 4466 cases were registered, it came down to 3074 in 2015 and then to 2692 in 2016.
The rate of cognisable crime under Special and Local Laws (SLL) is recorded at 51.1 with 3006, 1482 and 1014 offenses registered in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively. Similarly, offences under the Indian Penal Code and SLL have also seen a drop. The data indicates that 7472 IPC and SLL cases together were registered in 2014, while 4556 and 3706 cases were recorded in 2015 and 2016 respectively. The rate under this category is recorded at 186.2.
A total of 30 murder cases were reported in 2016 while two cases of dowry deaths were also reported. There were five cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty while interestingly Goa has not seen any kidnapping of women to compel her for marriage last year.
