PANJIM: The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has declared that the debris on National Highway 66 at Malpem Naibag left by the landslide will be cleared. Thereafter the work of slope stabilistion by way of benching will be taken up and completed by September 30th and the highway will be open for traffic.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has declared that the NH66 at Malpem Naibag will be thrown open after clearing the debris and benching. Immediate clearing of the debris was attempted, but due to incessant rains, it was leading to further slides. Hence 25 mt wide private land had to be acquired both sides of the cut section to carryout benching for slope stabilisation
IIT Bombay carried an inspection on July 11, 2024. IIT Bombay suggested to clear the debris and hanging boulders and improve drainage on top of cut slopes to mitigate further aggravation of the situation.
MoRTH said the landslide occurred on July 7 due to unprecedented rainfall. After the landslide the traffic was stopped and diverted along existing old road. During construction, proper benching of the cut slope was not possible due to land constraints
Therefore retaining wall of 5 to 6 mt height was constructed in a length of 270 mt on both sides for its protection, MoRTH said
