PANJIM: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) is likely to shift to its new permanent campus in Cuncolim by December this year. NIT director Gopal Mugeraya said that from the academic year 2023-24, the institute will operate from its new premise.
The institute has been functioning from its temporary campus at Farmagudi since its establishment in 2010. The foundation stone for the campus was laid in December 2018.

Addressing mediapersons on Wednesday, Mugeraya said that the new premise would be inaugurated before December 31, this year at the hands of President of India Draupadi Murmu.
“Due to the Covid pandemic and other technical issues, the work was delayed. But now the work has picked up and now the work is expected to be complete very soon,” he said.
He said that after shifting to the permanent campus, the institute will be able to utilize its full strength by offering admissions to 1200 students initially.
“The campus is being designed to accommodate 2,000 students, besides faculty and administrative staffers. Our aim is also to have a Master’s programme in new fields,” he said. Currently, there are 800 students of which 40 per cent of seats are reserved for Goans.
Meanwhile, the students of NIT will act as ‘student teacher volunteers’ for the students of standards VIII to X from the government schools with a view to improving their academic standards.
The NIT Goa in coordination with the Education department will implement the ‘Each one Teach One’ programme across the government schools, from October 15 onwards.
Mugeraya further informed that the 8th Convocation of NIT Goa is scheduled on September 30 in the presence of Governor of Goa PS Sreedharan Pillai.
