The Union government has clarified that no proposal for setting up a Metro Rail or urban rail system has been received from Goa so far.
The information was shared in the Rajya Sabha in response to a question raised by Goa MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade, who sought to know whether any feasibility study had been conducted or plans were under consideration to introduce a metro or light rail system in the state.

Replying on behalf of the Centre, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs stated that urban transport planning falls under the jurisdiction of state governments. The Centre examines requests for financial assistance only after a formal proposal is submitted by the concerned state.
The minister further noted that metro rail and regional rapid transit systems are currently operational in several cities across the country, with substantial investments made in recent years. However, Goa has not yet initiated the process by sending a proposal to the Union government.
The clarification highlights that any future move towards a metro or urban rail network in Goa would first require the state government to prepare and forward a detailed proposal to the Centre.
