PANJIM: A day after two
college students were caught for allegedly possessing drugs, the National
Students Union of India (NSUI) has demanded that the government make it
mandatory to set up anti-narcotics committees in all educational institutions.
On Friday, Anti Narcotics
Cell (ANC) and Crime Branch (CB) sleuths arrested two students of Goa
Engineering College, Farmagudi-Ponda for allegedly possessing narcotics.

Addressing media persons,
NSUI State President Ahraz Mulla said the students’ union would be writing to
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and Goa University Vice Chancellor to direct
educational institutions to set up anti-narcotics committees in line with the
anti-ragging committee, which has been a wide success.
NSUI also demanded that sale
of tobacco products and alcohol be banned within 500 meters of educational
institutions. “We would like to congratulate ANC and CB for their action
against the college students, who are getting pulled into such illegal
activities,” Mulla said.
“The Chief Minister needs to
take immediate steps to ensure that committees are constituted. The
anti-ragging committees have been successful, with Goa having zero number of
cases,” he said.
Mulla recalled that in 2015,
two youths had died of suspected drug overdose at a birthday party at Curtorim.
“Despite such a tragic incident, the government has failed to ensure that
youths are safe from narcotics. The government has miserably failed to weed out
drugs from the State,” he said.
