MARGAO: Fearing that the heritage structure of old Hospicio hospital will crumble down if neglected, Concerned Citizens of Margao have urged the government to consider their request of handing over the portion of the Hospicio to the Goa Archdiocese of Goa and Daman to continue with the health care services.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Aleixo Pacheco along with Savio Coutinho, J Santano Rodrigues, Maria Fernandes and Mechanzie ….said that the sole intention of asking for the possession of the Hospicio is to cater the needs of the poor and public in general pertaining to providing health care facilities.

He also informed that the request with the government is the first step of the process which will be followed by plans in detail.
“Yes, the representatives of the Goa Archdiocese will follow up the matter with the Chief Minister and the concerned department”, said Pacheco.
He said Hospicio was functioning till the health services shifted to the new district hospital and now the structure is laying ideal.
“And hence, we like to continue with the work of late Fr Antonio Joao de Miranda who had conceived the idea of Hospicio in 1867. After lengthy discussions for the last few years, a project report has been prepared and accordingly a proposal has been submitted to the government”, he added.
Savio Coutinho said that there are many structures in Margao which have historical importance and Hospicio has very rich history pertaining to medical facilities.
“After the shifting of health services to the new hospital we can witness the neglected structure of the Hospicio. There is no maintenance properly. However, Goa Archdiocese gave the proposal to the government requesting to hand over the premises,” he stated.
He is of the opinion the history of the Hospicio will vanish if the structure is neglected. Let put the premises for proper use, as plans are in pipeline to cater people from all the communities with regard to health services.
