Olive Ridley Turtles lay eggs at Morjim, Vagator beaches

MORJIM: Four Olive Ridley turtles laying eggs on Morjim and Vagator beaches were reported in last two days.

On February 16 an Olive Ridley turtle laid 93 eggs at Morjim Beach at 3.45 am followed by another at Vagator Beach where the turtle laid 137 eggs at 4.10 am. Another turtle laid 73 eggs at 6.30 pm at Morjim Beach, on the same day a Forest Department official said.

The fourth turtle laid 101 eggs on early morning of Thursday at 4.30 am. All the eggs are safely preserved by the Forest Department staff in the nest at Morjim Beach including the 137 eggs laid at Vagator Beach.

Meanwhile, since December 2021 to till date, total 32 nests are created at Morjim Beach. The Olive Ridley turtle which laid 130 eggs in December out of which, 27 hatchlings were safely released in the sea while remaining 103 was damaged due to rains.
