MARGAO: Carmona Village Panchayat appears to be completely dysfunctional since the time Sarpanch Savita Mascarenhas went on medical leave, as the regular gram sabha has not been convened nor regular work like collection of garbage is being done.
Among other bad logs, Carmona is the only panchayat in Salcete taluka that has not convened the regular gram sabha for the month of April despite directives from the Block Development Officer. The panchayat keeps away from convening special gram sabha to celebrate the World Environment Day.
Deputy Sarpanch Vailona Fernandes who is holding charge admitted that the extension of leave by Savita threw her off gear and further admitted that she could not convene the gram sabha as Savita did not even suggest a date to hold it.
Deprived of the routine service of the panchyat caused great disappointment among villagers. They have more to seethe. Citing few they mentioned that nothing has been done about the football ground even though at the last gram sabha meeting it was decided to do preliminary work on the ground so that a football tournament could be organized in June.
They even pointed out that the dry garbage that is collected from the households and stacked in the yard near the community hall been and it’s piling their as it has not been taken away for over a month. Dogs feasting on the waste has scattered the litter further.
“This is very dangerous and could result in all types of illness especially now that the monsoons have started,” said a villager Venzy Viegas.
However, Vailona said the garbage has not been collected because the Solid Waste Management Corporation that used to take it had a problem with their vehicle. “The moment the vehicle is repaired they will collect it,” she said.
