Parcem VP, locals close access to Mogacho waterfall due to open quarry pits

PERNEM: Concerned about the safety of residents and visitors, the Parcem Village Panchayat, in collaboration with local communities, has taken proactive measures to prevent potential tragedies at the scenic Mogacho waterfall. The waterfall, formed by rainwater cascading into an open laterite stone quarry, has been a popular destination for tourists, families, and migrants during the monsoon. However, the unsecured quarry pits have tragically claimed several lives, especially young individuals and school students, over the last five years.

In an effort to avert further accidents, the panchayat decided to close access to the Mogacho Waterfall and installed warning signs. The decision comes after multiple incidents, including the drowning of four students in a filled open pit in September 2019, as well as other fatalities involving youths aged  between 19 and 21 (in 2020), and a Russian national (in 2022).

While the panchayat’s decision to close access to the Mogacho Waterfall is a commendable step, there remains an urgent need for more comprehensive safety measures.
