People of Nuvem call for strict tenant verification of migrant labourers

MARGAO: Locals of Nuvem constituency on Monday renewed their demand for strict tenant verification of migrant labourers across the villages, after a labourer was found on the road in Loutolim with his throat slit.

While the labourer was sent to the hospital for treatment, locals said the police should have proper information about where all the migrants are staying in the villages.

They demanded that the police enhance its tenant verification exercise. The details of the migrants entered in the police records should also include the address of their rented premises and the names of the owners of such premises.

They added that this is important as when incidents occur, there is immediate information available and the police can rush to the spot without wasting time and also gather information about which other migrants they were staying with or where they are working.

They added that this would ensure the authorities have control of the situation, as opposed to starting from the scratch and trying to figure out these details after the incident occurs. Gathering such crucial information becomes difficult if the victim is not in a position to communicate or murdered.

While these issues have been raised at the village gram sabhas in the past and the police had given assurances of carrying out such tenant verification exercises, locals felt that there are still big  in terms of information available with the police.

They further added that this will also act as an effective preventive measure against criminal activities involving migrants.
