A petition was signed by a several people raising concerns regarding the treatment to seafarers and their protesting relatives and representatives. The petition, which was addressed to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister and Chief Secretary who is heading the State Executive Committee.
“We strongly protest the arrest of seafarers’ wives under sections 188, 269 and 270 of the IPC at Panjim, when all each of them were doing is seeking redressal of their long pending grievance of the government not taking proactive steps to get the seafarers/ their near and dear ones home,” said the petitioners.
“We find it absurd that they and representatives of seafarer organisations were arrested under IPC sections which, speak of spreading infection of disease dangerous to life when one of them came on a hunger strike and others who also came with their concerns maintained physical distance and were in fact advocating to ensure prevention of infection of the seafarers/of their near and dear ones,” the petition added.
They demanded that the government takes steps on priority basis and get all the Goan seafarers, who wish to return, home.
