United Goans Foundation (UGF) has decided to support candidates across Goa. UGF President Ashish Kamat stated, “We will support candidates in Bicholim, Cuncolim, Quepem, Vasco, Curchorem, Sanguem, and Valpoi if they have been working hard in social fields and have strong moral values. We won’t support candidates who have a shady background or who have been named in any controversy.”
He continued, “Several candidates from across Goa had approached UGF. We are presently short-listing the best people to support. Initially, we had planned to support candidates only from Margao, but looking at the response, we have decided to go pan Goa.”
UGF secretary Avinash Tavares added, “Garbage management and the Outline Development Plan (ODP) will be our major issues this election.”
Meanwhile, the Congress has been convening regular meetings at the residences of its MLAs. However, they are yet to announce their panel for the elections. Sources informed that Congress workers are planning to contest against their own party in several wards.
To quell the rebellion, senior party officials have been making rounds of Margao for the last few days. Party workers are also being advised not to interact with the media.
Meanwhile, the Margao BJP has already short-listed its candidates for all 25 wards. Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai also plans to field his own panel.
