PONDA: The soaring price of tomatoes has made it too hot to handle for the people of Ponda, who have reduced its consumption.
The price of tomatoes has been skyrocketing due to shortage in supply because of crop loss since past few weeks. The prices were normal until the third week of June, but due to delay in rains, the crop production has taken a huge hit across the country.

Till the third week of June, price of one kilogram of tomato in Ponda market was Rs 20. Then it rose to Rs 30, later touched Rs 40, Rs 50, Rs 70 and now it has touched Rs 140 per kg, said the vendors in Ponda market.
There is no respite for consumers buying tomatoes from the Horticulture outlets, where the cost of 1kg tomato has reached Rs 108. Last year too, tomato prices had soared and touched Rs 80 per kg. But this year it has gone beyond Rs 100 per kg.
As per the vendors, the crops have been affected due to the extreme heat that prevailed in June. They however hoped that the prices would stabilise as fresh crop is harvested.
