PONDA/SANKHALI: There appears to be a straight fight for the posts of the chairperson and the vice-chairperson of Ponda Municipal Council as four councillors filed their nominations on Monday.
Whereas for Sankhali, only Rashmi Desai and Anand Kanekar filed their nominations for the chairperson and vice-chairperson and the duo are likely to be elected unopposed on Tuesday morning.
Incumbent Ponda chairperson Ritesh Naik filed his nomination while the MGP-backed Rising Ponda panel has fielded Councillor Shivanand Sawant. For the vice-chairperson’s post, BJP-supported Councillor Deepa Colvekar and Vedika Volvoikar of Rising Ponda have filed their nominations.
In the 15-member Ponda Municipal Council, the strength of BJP-backed panel is 10, while, Rising Ponda had four councillors and one independent councillor is also backing the Rising Ponda. It is learnt that the Rising Ponda is trying to seek support of some of the councillors who are disappointed for not being chosen for the coveted posts.
However, on Tuesday before the election, time will be given to the candidates willing to withdraw their nominations.
For Sankhali, the election of Rashmi Desai and Anand Kanekar is a foregone conclusion as they are the only two councillors, who filed their nominations.
