PONDA: In a novel eco-friendly approach to tackle garbage, the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has decided to use cycle trolleys to collect garbage in the town on a trial basis.
The PMC has decided to procure a cycle trolley, priced at about Rs 14,000, and if the experiment is successful, more cycle trolleys are to be procured by the PMC.
Once the cycle trolley project gets an approval, all 14 wards in PMC will have daily wage workers pedaling a cycle trolley to collect garbage.
“The decision was taken to reduce vehicle use and cycle trolleys are eco-friendly. Depending on the results, we will decide whether to procure additional cycle trolleys,” informed PMC Chairperson Dr Radhika Naik.
“The cycle trolley will have bins for wet and dry waste collection,” Naik added.
