PANJIM: The State Electricity Department is set to transform, upgrade and strengthen its outdated infrastructure at an estimated cost of over Rs 1,000 crore in the next two years to ensure that its consumers receive uninterrupted power supply.
The project, which will kick off once the ongoing election code of conduct is lifted, also aims at reducing the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) loss at 5 per cent against the present 18 per cent.
“The power crisis that the State is reeling under is not because of shortage of power but due to outdated infrastructure, which has not been updated for nearly three-four decades now,” a senior official said.
The department has already prepared a detailed project for infrastructure upgradation and the administrative approval for the same has been received.
The project will be taken up in a phased manner over two years, after which the State will have no power crisis. The upgradation will include replacement of conductors, transformers, new underground cables, overhead cables, poles, etc.
