MAN DROWNS AT PARODA
A 54-year-old man from Paroda drowned along an inundated road near the church at Paroda on Tuesday night. Quepem Police suspect the incident took place when Pradeep Hegde was returning home from work on Tuesday night. After Hegde alighted from the bus at Gudi-Paroda, he was walking along the main Paroda-Margao road when he fell into a roadside trench filled with water at Paroda. Police further said villagers noticed Hegde’s body floating in the water along the submerged Paroda-Margao road on Wednesday afternoon and alerted them.

MAPUSA MARKET FLOODS
Activities at the Mapusa market virtually came to a standstill on Wednesday morning, as the market area was flooded and water entered some of the shops. Muddy water filled the entrance of the market, making it difficult for public to enter the municipal market. Speaking to Herald, Mapusa Merchants Association President Yeshwant Gaundalker regretted that the Mapusa market regularly gets flooded during the monsoons. “The Mapusa Municipal Council has not cleaned the drainage and gutters properly,” alleged Gaundalker. The KTC bus stand was also partially flooded, while the area around Bodgeshwar Temple also witnessed water logging.
CALANGUTE TOO BEARS THE BRUNT
Normal life was affected due to heavy showers in the coastal belt of Calangute. All major roads leading to Calangute, Candolim, Baga and Arpora-Nagoa were flooded, making it difficult for motorists to travel along the roads. The road from Our Lady of Piety Chapel, Cobra Vaddo, up to Baga was flooded despite construction of new cross drains. Some locals were seen filling buckets of water from their low-lying houses due to flooding of roads at Baga. Pedestrians walking along the newly constructed footpath along the Cobra Vaddo-Baga road found it difficult to walk along as cars splashed muddy water on them. In Arpora, a club house was partly submerged in water, while paddy fields were flooded in the area. Students too had a difficult negotiating water-logged roads.
Landslide at Anmod
COLLEM: A major landslide at Anmod, about 5 kms from Mollem Check Post, paralysed traffic for several hours along the Belgaum-Ponda highway in the wee hours of Wednesday,
Many trees got uprooted while an iron crash barrier was also damaged due to the landslide.
Hundreds of trucks were seen parked on both sides of the road, while many passengers proceeding towards Goa were also held up.
According to Collem PI Jivaba Dalvi, a truck driver proceeding from Mollem to Belgaum at about 2 am saw the road blocked and alerted the police.
Collem Police rushed to the site and stopped the vehicles plying towards Belgaum, while the police at Ramnagar-Karnataka were also alerted about the landslide. Vehicles were stopped at Ramnagar from proceeding to Goa.
Ponda PWD personnel along with heavy machinery started clearing the highway early in the morning and it took about 6 hours to clear the mud from the road. Collem Police reopened the highway for traffic at about 1.30 pm.
Sanvordem MLA Ganesh Gaonkar and South Goa Collector N D Agrawal visited the site to take stock of the situation.
