In rare surgery ever to be performed in Goa, Government veterinary doctors successfully treated a one-year-old mouse for a ‘tumor-like mass’ on the face close to the right eye.
The white mouse, belonging to Nitesh Rivonkar of Mapusa suffered from irritation near the eye for over a month after which he was referred to veterinary hospital at Karaswada, Mapusa, whose doctors referred him to their counterparts in Panjim at Tonca.
Nitesh revealed that his pet “would continuously scratch the area near his right eye. Gradually the eye turned reddish after which we had to rush to the doctor.”
Noted Goan veterinary surgeon Dr Gustav Pinto, who conducted the surgery on the mouse, said that the mouse attempted to self mutilate the lump as it would hinder his sight and other activity.
The one-inch tumor was removed in 45-minute surgery and thus saved the eye-sight of the mouse.
However, due to post-surgery effects, the mouse has reduced the food intake. But Dr Pinto assured the family that the post-op treatment would heal all the pain and would surely but slowly improve its appetite.
