MARGAO: The recent spate of burglaries and thefts reported in Salcete have led to public demands for increasing police patrolling, especially in front of houses located in secluded areas.
The recent day-light robbery in Benaulim and other cases of break-ins have left locals frightened, with senior citizens who live alone calling for the police to regularly check on their well-being as they fear they could be easy targets for thieves lurking around.

Victims of such thefts that have taken place recently said they were shocked to see how brazenly the culprits entered their houses at night when they were not at home and shuddered to think what would have happened had they been at home when the burglars struck.
However, they lamented that despite having such CCTV footage, they have not been able to identify the culprits, and the police have not been successful in cracking the cases either.
“The police should conduct patrolling of all the roads regularly and also keep an eye on the quiet lanes, which are often in darkness as the streetlights are not functioning. There has to be some sense of fear of the law,” said Ramesh Desai, a businessman from Margao.
“There also should be a tenant verification exercise done by the police as the thieves appear to have a good knowledge of our houses and whereabouts,” said Eric Fernandes, a student from Benaulim.
