VASCO: In a decisive move against encroachments, the Comunidade of Sancoale initiated the demolition of nearly 64 illegal structures located on its land in Zuarinagar. The majority of these structures, situated behind the Birla police outpost, faced the wrecking ball, with 18 structures demolished on the first day. The remaining structures are slated for demolition by the following day.
Pratap Mardolkar, President of the Comunidade of Sancoale managing committee, highlighted that occupants of the 64 houses had been duly warned about the impending demolition drive.
Despite ample notice, they disregarded the Comunidade’s warnings. He said that the Comunidade was unaware about the reports that some elements had sold the land to these people, who he added, that they have now been left in the lurch. He has appealed to the people not to encroach on Comunidade land and not to build houses illegally, adding that there is no provision in the Code of Comunidades to regularise illegal structures.
Furthermore, Mardolkar appealed to government departments, specifically the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Electricity Department, not to issue water and power connections to illegal houses. He argued that such actions would discourage people from engaging in illegalities.
Comunidade of Sancoale’s attorney, Jayesh Fadte, revealed that a survey, conducted with police protection, identified the 64 illegal structures targeted for demolition.
A robust police presence was deployed in Zuarinagar to prevent any potential law and order issues during the demolition drive.
