MARGAO: The Shadow Council for Margao on Monday demanded a police investigation into the incident of arson that resulted in extensive damage to a garbage transfer station at Colmorod, Margao.

Savio Coutinho, Convenor of SCM, in a complaint to the MMC Chief Officer said that a transfer station belonging to the Margao Municipal Council was set ablaze in the early hours of Sunday, causing losses of over Rs one lakh to the public exchequer.

The SCM also expressed its displeasure at the fact that the said transfer station was mismanaged by the workers of the blue-eyed waste collection contractor of the civic body.

Coutinho added that the fire has affected the daily waste collection in the areas of Colmorod and Ratwado for the past two days, causing immense hardships to the residents here.

Coutinho also pointed out a huge shop/fabricated structure presently erected at the site illegally, and another one being erected there, and alleged that the fire incident was the handiwork of some unscrupulous elements eyeing the government acquired land there.

“The fact that there was no police complaint filed by the Council until Monday evening raises suspicions that the arsonists have political backing,” said Coutinho.
