MARGAO: The Superintendent of Police (SP) South, Arvind Gawas, has in a letter addressed to the Director of Tourism asked to beef up security measures at four specifically named beaches in Betalbatim and also at other strategic and vulnerable places in South Goa.
Referring to the gang rape that occurred on May 25 at around 9.30 pm primarily because of the prevailing darkness, he said, there have been various other cases of thefts, molestations, rape and even murder at the beaches taking cover of darkness.
He specifically named Lovers Beach, Sunset Beach, Gonsua Beach and Nanu Beach in Betalbatim and also pointed out that the thick bushes present on these beaches provides cover for the culprits who can hide amongst the bushes and look out for their likely victims.
Gawas said there is an urgent need to install high masts to illuminate the four beaches specifically and also suggested that cautionary/warning hoarding be erected to prevent and help detect crimes at these places.
