Stargazers will be able to sit next to the Miramar beach and enjoy the view of the galaxy in a 3-D digital planetarium within the next six to eight months.
Goa Science Centre at Miramar is constructing a 3-D planetarium costing Rs 76 lakh in its premises with a seating capacity for 50 people.
GSC’s project coordinator V N Joshi said that the planetarium will take shape with finances from the State and Central governments on 50:50 per cent basis. “There will be regular sky shows in the planetarium,” he said.
The centre attracts around one lakh visitors annually. Joshi said that last year, 96,500 people, most of whom were students, visited the complex.
He said the centre can become a major tourist attraction but the kind of guests that come to Goa are not interested in visiting places like a science centre. “But still, we are trying our level best to advertise the place through tour operators,” he mentioned.
Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has included GSC as a tourist attraction in its brochure.
Joshi said the response from locals has been good. These drop in to see the various exhibits on display here, he mentioned and added, “The centre adds at least five to six new exhibits to its menu every year.”
He said the aim of the centre was to make people understand science through experiments. “People should involve themselves in science to understand it,” Joshi noted.
“In other museums you are not allowed to touch the exhibits, but here you can interact with the exhibits to understand and feel real science,” he observed.
