CALANGUTE: Touts and pimps top the list of those arrested by Calangute Police Station, which has been ranked as the No 1 police station in the State in 2022 following an internal assessment by the Goa Police, earning a cash reward of Rs 30,000 and certificates for all the staff.
With performance of a police station decided on parameters such as prevention of crime, crime detection, maintenance of records and other factors, the statistics for Calangute make for an interesting reading.
Being the most popular beach destination, it’s not surprising that the highest number of those arrested were for violation of the Tourist Trade Act are mostly touts — 414 persons were arrested and Rs 10,74,000 collected in fines. In addition, another 175 were arrested for offences under Section 107 of CrPC and Section 34 of IPC, for attempt to cheat and commit violence.
Besides this, more than Rs 56 lakh worth stolen property was recovered from incidents of robbery and thefts, mostly involving tourists and tourism stakeholders.
There were 14 cases under the NDPS Act with 15 persons arrested, two cases booked and five arrests under the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act and eight cases of extortion, Calangute PI Dattaguru Sawant said.
