Two persons were feared drowned while two others were rescued, when a trawler capsized in the sea off Vagator on Tuesday evening.
According to Anjuna police, the incident took place as the trawler was returning to Chapora jetty after a catch of fish. The trawler was caught in the rough sea and capsized.
Anjuna police was alerted at about 5.45 pm and a helicopter was pressed into service to locate the two missing persons. Anjuna police was unsure of the identities of the two missing persons and referred to them as Ansui and Guddu.
Narrating the sequence of events, an eyewitness told Herald that the trawler, owned by Eknath Khorjuenkar, was returning to Chapora jetty when it ran into the rough sea and got dragged along a narrow stretch at the Vagator beach.
Water then entered into the fishing trawler, forcing the engine to stop and the boat capsized within 20 to 30 metres off Vagator beach. All four persons in the trawler, including Khorjuenkar, jumped off to save their lives.
While Khorjuenkar and an employee managed to swim to safety with the help of locals, the two other employees were not so lucky and were feared drowned. A helicopter was pressed into service and the search is still going on till late evening, an eyewitness added.
