VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council building, which is undergoing renovation work, was cordoned off on Friday after NGO Goa First demanded to erect signboard displaying project details, permissions and depute security guard at the site for public safety.
In a press release issued by Goa First, President Parshuram Sonurlekar thanked the Deputy Collector of Mormugao for swiftly acting upon his complaint against MMC for undertaking the repairs and renovation of building without following any safety measures.

“Initially, when the renovation work commenced there was no fencing and barricading for this building which was dangerous to the life of people visiting the MMC building, government staff. It was also dangerous for the workers engaged in repair work and also to the government and private vehicles parked outside the building,” Sonurlekar stated.
“Since Friday onwards, a temporary fencing using green matt/cloth was seen put up by the concerned authorities.
Although, our NGO still demands proper steel sheet fencing, a security person at the site, with signboard giving information of permissions and project details for public,” he added.
Sonurlekar also pointed out that the government agencies and authorities should not make haste in completion of projects in haphazard manner and should follow proper SOPs. If authorities find out individuals violating these safety norms and SOPs while constructing or repairing and structures then the concerned authorities should penalise such violators.
On a concluding note, he said that Goa First has high hopes that all the government administrative offices will be shifted to Sada new market complex and that infrastructure will be put to use sooner.
It may be recalled that two days ago, Herald highlighted this issue of the renovation of municipality building is ongoing without undertaking any cordoning of the building and displaying of signboard at the site. After the news appeared in this daily, the authorities swung into action and cordoned the building area for public safety.
