VASCO: In a bold move that could inspire other municipal councils and as part of the ongoing Swatch Bharat Mission, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday issued notices to all the vehicle owners to remove their vehicles left abandoned alongside the roads under the municipal jurisdiction within 14 days, failing which the MMC will confiscate and dispose-off such unclaimed vehicles after the expiry of notice period.
According to MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes, complying with his directions, the municipal staff recently submitted their survey report on unused and abandoned vehicles which were kept abandoned by the side of the road thereby creating public nuisance. He said that the survey report was then forwarded to the Office of Assistant Director of Transport to seek details of registered owner’s address which was received by the municipality very recently.
“Since we have now got the details of abandoned vehicles as well as the address of the registered owners, we have already started the process to issue notices to such owners giving them 14 days time to remove their vehicles failing which we will first tow down such abandoned vehicles from the existing site and if the party fails to comply with our directions or fails to take possession of their vehicles then we will finally dispose-off such vehicles ‘as is where is basis’. The drive is part of our ongoing Swatch Bharat Mission and these vehicles are posing as an eyesore” Fernandes said.
