PANJIM: As Goa entered fourth day of the lockdown on Wednesday, the District Magistrate, North barred movement of vehicles except government vehicles on duty, till the intervening midnight of April 14-15, 2020. A similar order has been issued by the South Goa District Magistrates.

The order comes a day after Goa Police warned the violators of action under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
District Magistrate (North) R Menaka said that exigent measures are being taken to prevent any danger to human life or safety and thwart spread of COVID-19.
“I, do hereby order for ban on movement of vehicles in North Goa District except Government vehicles on official duty, vehicles of Government servants on duty displaying valid Government Identity Proof and vehicles providing essential services for which Travel Permit is issued by District authorities with effect from intervening midnight of March 24-25, 2020 to intervening midnight of April 14-15, 2020,” reads the order.
The two-page order states that due to prevailing situation in the country owing to health emergency posed by COVID-19, the preventive measures are taken. “In order to contain the spread of the said epidemic, certain measures are required to be taken. It is essential to enforce social distancing of people to prevent the spread of the virus,” it says.
The State government on March 13, 2020 had invoked Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 in a major precautionary step to contain the spread of the infection. The decision was taken since cases in other States have been exponentially rising.
Any person contravening the order shall be punishable under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
