MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has claimed that strict cordoning of the boundaries of the civic body’s jurisdiction has helped reduce its wet waste burden by almost 50 per cent. The civic body has, over the last two months after cordoning its boundaries, booked 60 cases of dumping of wet waste from outside the town, and recovered around Rs 1.40 lakh in fines.
“After deliberating the issue at a meeting attended by higher officials from the District Collectorate and the police, it was decided to cordon off our boundaries with strict vigilance, to curb the dumping of wet waste from neighbouring villages, said MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar. He further informed that in the past, they used to receive nearly 35 to 40 tonnes of garbage, which has now reduced to 18 to 20 tonnes after cordoning the boundaries.

People from outside the commercial town of Margao were seen dumping their wet waste in the jurisdiction of the civic body, resulting in black spots, and leaving the municipality to tackle them.
Few of the areas notorious for dumping of external waste include Ring Road, the vicinity of the Collectorate, near Durga petrol pump and the Navelim borders.
