TIVIM: The lone accused, Avdhut Halarnkar, arrested in connection with the assault on St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh, was released on bail on Thursday.
Mapusa Police late Friday evening arrested Halarnkar (53) of Colvale. On Saturday, the accused was produced before Mapusa Court, who remanded him to five days police custody.
Meanwhile, when Herald sought to know about the progress into the investigation and about other accused persons who are yet to be arrested, police sources informed that the probe was in progress and notices have been served to all the accused.
“Verification process is in progress to ascertain whether the accused persons were present at the crime site on the day of the incident. Their relatives and friends have also been approached to verify the facts and police is also verifying the location of the accused at the time of the incident,” the police source told Herald.
When contacted, NCP leader and ex-MLA Nilkant Halarnkar said people from all walks of life and the State are condemning the incident. “Police functioning is questionable at this time, as they are not able to arrest the other accused. The government’s action is also questionable for being a mere spectator,” stated Halarnkar. “Police should do their duty honestly by arresting the other accused, as it concerns attack on a MLA of a ruling government. If police are not able to crack this case, then what about the common man,” he questioned.
