PANJIM: The Water Resources Department carried out the desilting of ponds in the island village of Santo Estevam, recently.
The work was carried out after a request was made by the Village Panchayat of St Estevam to Minister for Water Resources Department Filipe Neri Rodrigues. The work has been executed by Junior Engineer Vinod Naik and supervised by Ramesh Mashelkar.
The village which has been a buzz for its agricultural activities in the recent times is now looking at this initiative as an opportunity to further boost farming in the village. These desilted ponds, which were left un-attended for years, are located in key areas of the village where farming activities are undertaken or in areas which have a potential of catering to farming activities in the near future.
This activity is set to improve the ground water level and thus will strengthen the existing water resources of the village, says a press release issued here.
Sarpanch Joanita D’Costa has expressed the gratitude of the villagers to the WRD Minister and the officials of the WRD department for their efforts in fulfilling one of the long term needs of the village.
