The Japan Cricket Association (JCA) is reportedly working with ITW Universe to finalise broadcast arrangements for the match. ITW Universe is also understood to be in discussions with major Indian television networks, including Star, Sony and Zee, regarding linear broadcast rights.
FanCode, which has previously worked closely with the JCA on pathway competitions, is expected to stream the match for viewers in India. A final confirmation, however, is still awaited.
Organisers have also considered the possibility of broadcasting the game live on YouTube with a relatively simple production setup. That option could still be used for viewers outside India if a wider broadcast arrangement is not finalised.
Broadcast challenge due to Asian Games schedule
One of the biggest challenges facing the organisers is the timing of the match. The India-Japan men’s T20I is scheduled for September 22, the same day as the women’s cricket gold-medal match at the Asian Games.
With India’s women’s team among the contenders for a place in the final, the two matches could potentially overlap, creating a scheduling and broadcast challenge.
The Asian Games’ media rights are held by Sony Network, adding another layer to the broadcast discussions surrounding the India-Japan fixture.
The organisers had also explored moving the match to September 23 to avoid a possible clash. However, Japan’s Asian Games schedule made that difficult. Japan’s men’s team is scheduled to travel to Aichi on September 24 for its opening group match against Afghanistan. The two locations are around 400 km apart.
India team travel and Asian Games plans
The Indian squad is expected to arrive in Sano on September 20, with training scheduled for the following day. The players are likely to remain in Sano for several days before travelling to Aichi for the Asian Games.
India’s campaign at the Asian Games is scheduled to begin with a quarter-final on September 28.
The Japan Cricket Association is also preparing the venue for the high-profile fixture. The Sano International Cricket Ground, which normally has a seating capacity of around 500, is expected to be upgraded temporarily to accommodate approximately 2,000 spectators.
