“Not Personal”: Bengaluru Startup Founder’s Lesson After Rejected Candidate Returns

A Bengaluru-based startup founder has shared a valuable perspective on professional relationships, explaining why employers shouldn’t take it personally when candidates turn down job offers.

Abhishek Vijayvergiya, co-founder of the AI hiring platform Fabric, detailed an experience involving a prospective employee who declined an offer from the company last year. Despite the startup’s strong interest in bringing the candidate on board, he opted to join a different firm. Vijayvergiya attempted to persuade him to reconsider, but when the decision remained final, both parties parted on amicable terms.

A year later, the candidate reached out to Fabric once again after the company he had initially joined ceased operations. Remembering the applicant’s talent and potential, Vijayvergiya noted that Fabric happened to be recruiting for a similar role, and the candidate swiftly progressed into the final interview stages.

Rethinking Disloyalty in Hiring

Reflecting on the situation in a post on LinkedIn, Vijayvergiya pointed out a standard double standard prevalent in corporate hiring. While companies routinely turn down applicants in search of candidates who better fit their immediate needs, candidates who make a similar choice are frequently labeled as disloyal or uncommitted.

Vijayvergiya shared a screenshot of the candidate’s original, polite refusal email from the previous year. In the message, the applicant clearly explained his decision to pursue another path to avoid keeping the team waiting, while also commending Fabric’s streamlined interview process and realistic AI evaluation system.
