Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club defeated Navelim Villagers Union 4-2 via the sudden-death tie-breaker to enter the finals of 2nd Alvernaz and Lalush Alemao memorial inter- village football tournament organised by Churchill Brothers Sports Club at Varca ground, on Friday. Sao Jose de Areal led 1-0 at the breather.
Sao Jose de Areal started of on a positive note and forged ahead in the 23rd minute through Fredrick Endro after receiving a pass from Mariano Rebello on the right.
Spurred by the early success, Sao Jose de Areal played with confidence and repeatedly raided the Navelim goal. However, Navelim goalkeeper Chandrakant Naik was the stumbling block for Sao Jose de Areal as he brought up umpteen saves to keep his teammates in a better frame of mind. Navelim Villagers tried their best to equalize but failed to get past the Navelim defense.
Changing over, Navelim Villagers desperate for an equalizer, went all out and their efforts were rewarded in the 64th minute when striker Sony Colaco controlled the ball and unleashed a shot which beat the Sao Jose de
Areal goalkeeper after receiving a pass from Jose Colaco.
Stunned by the equalizer, Sao Jose de Areal went all out in the remaining part of the game but failed to find success as Navelim goalkeeper Chandrakant Naik denied Sao Jose de Areal strikers success until the final whistle.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Sao Jose de Areal scored through Mariano Rebello, Aroon Endro and Socorro Monteiro while Jose Colaco converted for Navelim Villagers.
Mariano Rebello who played a stellar role for Sao Jose de Areal was awarded the man-of -the match prize.
