Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim huffed and puffed to a narrow 3-2 win over Salcete Football Club in GFA’s First Division League at Cuncolim ground, on Sunday. The teams were tied 1-1 at half time.
Levino Fernandes scored the fastest goal of the league within 10 seconds. Right at the start, striker Vitorino Fernandes gave a through pass to Levino who raced past the rival defenders and slotted past the rival keeper.
Stung by the early reverse, Salcete exhibited excellent football and made a couple of forays into the rival territory and were rewarded at the stroke of the lemon break when Francis Andrade floated the ball to Slegan Gracias who beautifully headed in.
Earlier, Cavelossim had scoring chances but their forwards spurned sitters.
Crossing over, Salcete scripted a better display and went into the attacking mode. Their efforts bore fruits when Alison Fernandes put Salcete into the lead with a stiff shot. However, their joy was shortlived as Cadwick Furtado neutralised the lead with a snap shot.
With the match heading for a draw, Cavelossim struck the match-winner in the 85th minute when striker Vitorino was brought down by a Salcete defender inside the box. Aaron Fernandes made no mistake with the resultant spot kick to send the Salcete keeper on the wrong way.
With this win, Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim occupy the top spot with 25 points from ten matches.
“I am happy with the performance of my boys and especially because we got full three points,” stated Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim coach Severino Fernandes.
