Chapora rally to hold Vagator; PVC win

MAPUSA: Chapora Yuvak Sangh fought gallantly to come back from three goals down to hold ten-men Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club to a 3-3 draw in a Second Division League Football match at Duler stadium, here on Monday.

The teams, having clean sheets from their last three league matches, started aggressively but it was Vagator who went into the breather with a three-goal cushion.

In the very third minute, Chapora custodian’s Soma Korgaonkar kick was intercepted by Vagator’s Reeve D’Costa, who quickly slammed it into the goal.

Chapora could have equalized in the 15th minute but Chandan Govenkar’s strike off a Joaquim Carvalho pass was collected by Vagator’s goalkeeper Mehboob Hussian.

As the match progressed, Vagator pumped in two quick goals in the 18th and 20th minutes through Kunal Virnodkar and Reeve D’Costa.

In last quarter of the match before the breather, Chandan Govekar’s cross was pushed to safety by Vagator’s custodian Mehboob. Later on, the goalkeeper thwarted Sankalp Kankonkar in a one-to-one situation.

On crossing over, Chapora came with renewed ideas and should have reduced the margin in the 55th minute but a smart header by Pavan Dhargalkar was brilliantly fisted for a corner by the Vagator goalkeeper.

In the very next minute, Chapora were awarded a penalty after Samson Gomes brought down Chapora’s Chandan Govenkar prompting referee Sunil Nannodkar to point to the dreaded spot. Pratik Dhargakar stepped forward and scored.

At the other end, a superb reverse kick by Reeve D’Costa was brilliantly fisted over for a corner by Chapora’s custodian Soma.

Vagator received a jolt in the 64th minute as Godwin Fernandes was shown the red by the referee.

Chapora’s coach Severino Fernandes inducted Sachind Satelkar and Arjun Shetgaonkar from the bench and the players scored with brilliant strikes beating Vagator custodian hands down to level the score.

At Guirim ground, Assonora United got the better of Pilerne 1-0.

At Parra, PVC Parra defeated Goan Warriors FC 3-1.

In other matches, Benny XI beat Cunchelim 3-1 and Colvale beat Sinquerim 2-1 at Salvador do Mundo ground.
