Chitra Madkaikar of ICAR Research Complex, Old Goa, won four gold and a silver to emerge the best woman athlete at ICAR West Zone sports meet at Andheri sports complex, Mumbai from February 3-6.
Chitra won the first place in 100m, 200m, long jump, shot put and second place in high jump to bag the individual crown. She was the first woman athlete to participate from the institute at the meet.
Suresh Gomes won the top place in high jump for men while Agostinho Fernandes emerged runner-up in carrom defeating a player from CIR on Cotton Technology, Mumbai 2-0.
Anil Khandeparkar won the first place in 800m and 1500m races. Tarika Mazgaokar finished third in 200m. Pranjali Wadekar won the bronze in shot put.
In football, ICAR lost to Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Rajasthan in the tie-breaker 1-2 in the semi-finals.
In volleyball, ICAR defeated National RC for Groundnut, Junagad, in the finals. Earlier, they beat Central Sheep and Wool research Institute, Avikanagar 2-0 and Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute Jhansi 2-0.
The 17-member team of the ICAR participated under chef-de-mission Edward Crasta and Agostinho Fernandes as manager.
Meanwhile, Dr V S Korikanthimath, Director ICAR, Old Goa, complimented the sports squad on their arrival and Chitra in a special way for her spectacular performance.
