Cuncolim Union emerge champs

MAPUSA, DEC 29 Cuncolim Union scored a 5-3 tie-breaker win over Sangolda Lightning Sports Club to lift the 3rd Pio Jose Memorial Cup in the all-Goa inter-village football tournament organized by Colvale Youth Sports Club at Colvale Church grounds on Monday.

Cuncolim Union scored a 5-3 tie-breaker win over Sangolda Lightning Sports Club to lift the 3rd Pio Jose Memorial Cup in the all-Goa inter-village football tournament organized by  Colvale Youth Sports Club at Colvale Church grounds on Monday.
The proceedings were evenly balanced throughout the first half while Cuncolim Union dominated the exchanges in the post interval period.
Early in the 8th minute, Sangolda midfielder Tome Alvares had an opportunity to put his team upfront off a free kick, but he missed the chance with only rival goalkeeper Rovan Colaco at his mercy
Crossing over, Cuncolim held sway over their rivals with their forwards giving a torrid time for Sangolda defenders. They came with sudden raids, but the rival defence was too strong for them. Cuncolim striker Peryson Rebello dribbled past and fired a powerful 20-yarder which missed the target. That happened in the 42nd minute.
As the teams failed to break the deadlock, the tie-breaker system had to be resorted to.
Franky Pereira, Peryson Rebello, Ulhas Gaonkar, Frazer Gomes, and Rovan Colaco were on target for Cuncolim while Shivanand Naik, Sanford Franco and Alex Gomes converted for Sangolda.
Earlier, President of Colvale YC, Ludovico Gouveia welcomed the chief guest Babu Azgaonkar, Sports Minister. Servo Fernandes introduced the players to chief guest.
Cuncolim received the trophy plus Rs. 25000 from Babu , while guest of honour, Fr. Salvador Fernandes, Parish Priest of St. Anthony Church, Tropa Siolim gave away the runners-up trophy plus Rs 15000 to Sangolda team.
Following prizes were awarded: Man-of-the match: Franky Pereira of Cuncolim.
Best player: Tome Alvares of Sangolda. Man of tournament Rovan Colaco of Cuncolim.
The function was compered by club secretary, Domnic Pereira, who also proposed the vote of thanks.
