Ilhas, Verna Veterans march ahead

RAIA: Verna Veterans got the better of Bardez Veterans by a solitary goal win to advance into the second round of 2nd Our Lady of Fatima Veteran Cup 2023 organised by Our Lady of Fatima Sports and Cultural Club, Baida-Chinchinnim, at Our Lady of Hope Church ground, on Monday.

In the initial quarter, Verna Veterans and Bardez Veterans played in a slow pace and showed no urgency to score goals. At half time, the scoreboard read 0-0. On resumption of play, in the 35th minute, Verna Veterans Seby Vaz scored the match-winning goal, well-fed by Santan Colaco. Bardez Veterans’ Sailesh Miskin failed to level terms in the dying minutes of the game.

At the final whistle, the score remained 1-0 in favour of Verna. Seby Vaz of Verna Veterans was adjudged the man-of-match presented by Judas Gomes, club member.

On Sunday,  Ilhas Veterans downed Fatorda Veterans 9-8 via tie-breaker to move into the next round.

In the 8th minute of play, Fatorda Veterans Anthony Pereira’s 30-yard shoot crushed into the net but their joy was short-lived as Fatorda Veterans’ Jack handled the ball in the danger area and penalty was awarded. Ramesh Palkar converted the spot-kick to equalise the score. 

At half time the score was 1-1. In second half, both teams had equal chances but no one registered their names on scoreboard and game ended in a goalless draw. In the resultant tie-breaker, Ilhas Veterans proved to be the better shooters. The man-of-match award was presented to Ilhas Veterans’ Pratap Sawant by Menino Rebello, treasure of club.
