Marcus bags top honours at SCG awards

PANJIM: Marcus Mascarenhas bagged top honours at the Sporting Clube de Goa annual award ceremony held at Don Bosco Club house, Panjim, on Wednesday.

The veteran striker, who smashed in eight goals in 11 games for the Flaming Oranje was instrumental in guiding his side in defending the Goa Professional League.

Marcus bagged the best striker award and also the golden boot award. He was also the golden boot winner of the Goa Professional League.

Ozen Silva, who marked his return for the club, bagged the best goalkeeper award.

Kunal Kundaikar, who could be probably seen for the last time with the Flaming Oranje jersey for the function, was named the best defender of the team. Kunal is likely to join FC Goa in the coming days.

Gautam Dias and Gourav Kankonkar were named best midfielder and player of the season respectively.

Rohit Totad bagged the young player of-the-season award.

Due to the ongoing restrictions Sporting Clube de Goa had a short function with the President Natalina Vaz gracing the same along with her daughter Danira and son Nathan at the Club House in Don Bosco, Panjim.

Natalina Vaz stated that she was proud of the boys who gave their best eventually being crowned champions. She added that she will continue with the legacy of her late husband, Peter Vaz who was the founder President of the Club. “I am extremely proud of the boys and assure that we will continue developing Players and enter the mainstream football very soon,” stated Natalina Vaz. Nathan Vaz who was a member of the Sub Junior State Team that were the finalists eventually losing to Jharkand in Goa in 2015 stated that his main priority for the upcoming season is to retain the GPL.

Danira Vaz thanked GFA for their cooperation and ensuring that the Goa Professional League was successfully organized.

All the players and Officials were felicitated and presented a Memento of Appreciation by the Club President Natalina Vaz. It is learnt that a few more individuals who supported the Club and the Vaz family during their testing time were to be felicitated but due to the ongoing restrictions all could not be invited in person. The following individual prizes were awarded.

Welvin Menezes, Angelo Albuquerque, Savio Vaz, Sebastiao Noronha, Vikram Mane, Sandesh Gadekar, Alex Alvares, Ajay Acharya, and Anthony Vas were also present for the function.
