PANJIM: Call it co-incidence or bad timing; Dempo Sports Club announced the departure of chief coach Arthur Papas, on Monday. A day after the five time I-League champions suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat at the hands of Kolkata giants East Bengal, at Nehru stadium, Fatorda.
Surprisingly, all the goals were scored by East Bengal came off the boots of former Nigerian striker Ranty Martins.
The Goan club has claimed that it had agreed last week to part ways with the Australian tactician, after he had resigned citing personal reasons.
The 34-year old had joined the club in June 2013 and guided the side to a fourth placed finish in the I-League. He had also guided his side to the Federation Cup final this season, ultimately losing out to Bengaluru FC.
Papas had also been involved in the inaugural edition of the Indian Super League (ISL), as assistant coach of FC Goa, but had also quit midway.
Papas was magnanimous and thanked everyone at the club.
“I wish to place on record my thanks to Shrinivas Dempo, support staff and the players for the period of employment as Head Coach of Dempo SC, and wish the Club continued success for the rest of the season and beyond,” said Papas.
