DAVORLIM: Hosts SC Davorlim defeated Margao SC 2-1 to lift the Davorlim Cup football tournament at Davorlim panchayat ground, on Sunday.
In the second minute, Margao SC striker Christopher Borges of Margao should have netted but the latter’s move was tackled by Leasser Raikar from the defence line.
At the other end, a powerful shot taken by Davorlim striker Abhay Shetty hit the Margao post and went out of play in the 16th minute.
Minutes later, Margao striker Necil Pinto took control of the ball from Velton D’Souza and dribbled past a couple of Davorlim defenders and sent the ball to Agnelo Noronha who took a glancing header but hit the Davorlim side netting in the 20th minute.
As the match progressed in the 26th minute, Jodrell Gomes netted the opening goal for Davorlim with a power-packed shot off Abhay Shetty’s connect. Agnelo Colaco doubled the lead for Davorlim with a snap shot.
With one minute left for the final whistle, Margao’s Cliff Barreto pulled a goal back with a free-kick.
The winners were awarded Rs. 40,000 while the runners-up received Rs. 30,000 plus trophies.
Govind Gawde, Minister for Art and Culture was the chief guest while Luizinho Faleiro, MLA of Navelim constituency was the guest of honour who gave away the prizes to winners and runners-up in the presence of Fr. Domnic Noronha, Chaplain of Our Lady of Rosary chapel, Davorlim, Bina Kulkarni, Sarpanch of VP Davorlim, Edwin Cardozo, ZP Member, Navelim and dignitaries.
