Sporting Clube cruise past Velsao SCC

MAPUSA: Sporting Clube de Goa registered a fluent 3-1 win over Velsao SCC in the CAM Goa Professional League played at Duler stadium here on Wednesday.

Sporting having lost their opening match to FC Goa saw coach Armando Colaco bring two changes in his Starting XI by fielding keeper Sanij Bugde and defender U20 Joyson Coutinho while Velsao SCC in charge Eban Mesquita started with the same lineup that saw his team win against Guardian Angel SC.

Flaming Oranje did start aggressively and had two close attempts at the rival goal. In the 12th minute a curling 25-yard strike by Stendly Fernandes was pairred for a corner by Velsao’s keeper Arnab Sharma.

Minutes later, Stendly sent a low cross to Nickson Castanha who connected it with a right footer which was brilliantly blocked by keeper Arnab.

At the other end, Velsao’s striker Meuton Fernandes dribbled past Sporting defender and tried to beat another defender on hos way to the goal, but lost the ball.

In the 24th minute, Velsao’s keeper Arnab collided with his own defender and laid prostrate on the ground to find a 30-yard shot by Ivon Costa enter the back of the nylons 1-0.

Velsao had a chance to level terms in the 33rd minute where Romario Da Costa set up Meuton Fernandes whose shot was timely blocked by Ivon Costa in the nick of time.

On crossing ends, in the 53rd minute Velsao’s Meuton Fernandes was brought down by Sporting’s Nickson Castanha inside the penalty box prompting referee Ritesh Parsekar to point to the dreaded spot. Meuton Fernandes stepped forward and scored 1-1.

Sporting should have taken the lead two minutes later but Stendly Fernandes header off a cross by Liston Cardozo rebounded off the crossbar.

Velsao unit received a jolt in the 59th minute with their skipper Ronaldo Pereira being sent off for second booking by the referee.

A smart clearance by Velsao’s Joliston Rebello off a combined move by Marcus Mascarenhas and Llyod Cardozo denied Sporting a goal.

However, Sporting once again took the lead in the 70th minute where a corner by substitute Velito Cruz saw defender Clive Miranda header hit the upright and rebounded into play to find Marcus Mascarenhas nod it home, 2-1.

As the match progressed, Marcus Mascarenhas received a head injury and was taken to the hospital.

In the 97th minute Sporting netted their third goal with Lloyd Cardozo getting hold of a through pass from Stendly Fernandes beat the Velsao keeper with a neat placement 3-1.

Alton Vaz of Sporting received the man of the match award from Laximan Hadfadkar’ GFA’s Executive Comitteee member.
