St Anthony’s Sporting Club, Colva entered the semi-final of 34th Cana Benaulim inter-village football tournament organised by Cana Benaulim Sporting Association edging past Betalbatim Sporting Club 1-0 at St John Baptist ground, Dando, Benaulim on Thursday. There was no score at half time.
Betalbatim Sporting Club had the lion share of exchanges in the opening session but it was poor finishing by their forwards which kept the scoreboard barren.
Betalbatim Sporting Club lost the golden opportunity to broke the deadlock midway in the opening session when striker Denzil Rogtao ballooned over from hand-shaking distance after being fed by Bonnie Fernandes.
Betalbatim Sporting Club had one more opportunity just five minutes before half time but Denzil Rogtao was the culprit as he shot wide as Bonnie Fernandes assist.
After change of ends, St Anthony’s Sporting Club were a transformed side and made umpteen forays into the rival territory with their forwards and midfielders working in tandem.
With the match heading for tie-breaker, St Anthony’s Sporting Club’s Leslie Fernandes struck the match-winner when he unleashed a snap shot which crashed into the net off a Nelson Gomes pass.
Stung by that setback, Betalbatim Sporting Club tried their best but failed to get past the Colva defence.
